Ready Plater Two

When you have a sibling or many, you have your automatic player two. They Luigi to your Mario. The second player, pushing the buttons for Tails. What do you do when you both grow up? Do you continue to play? Using online servers, to make it like how you used to. Or has your player two now become player one, with some else to be their player two. For me, I’ve been playing player one for such a long time, it’s such a shame I have missed out on so much. 

I want to say right away I don't play any games online, and do multiplayer. For me, multiplayer will always be me playing with someone else in the room. Whether that is us going head to head, or being on the same team. Whichever way it is, that's my idea of social gaming. I know some people would say playing online is still the same; you can chat to people, and have good discussions. However, with lag, and shifty people online isn’t my idea of gaming. 

Gaming for me is a big part of my life. I have done it for so long, it’s just me. The amount of people I have met and they've said, they used to do it with a family member, or similar is countless. Which is why when I say to them, why don’t we try some Mario Kart. Before you know it, they are getting some enjoyment from coming 6th. When previously they were 8th. While for me it's just nice playing with another person again. 

As a 90s kid of course I am used to the old school. Whether that was playing with friends in the arcade, or having a sleepover and playing countless rounds of Smash Bros, Smackdown and Goldeneye. This is what playing multiplayer will always be to me. There is just something about having the energy in the room. Laughing and enjoy the same moment together. Which is why, these will always be some of my favourite memories. When I think back to my university days. I don’t only think about partying. I think about how we would spend hours playing Call of Duty, Rock Band and Singstar. It was about having fun, and I think it was always an easy night/day killer. 

That was then, what about now? Why am I romancing the past of playing with other people? Well it’s simple really, the games. Recently I’ve had a lot of games recommended to me by the algorithms. When I look into these games, I see that either you need to play with a second person (I’m looking at you HazelLight). Or some of the games I have should be played with another person to bring out even more fun. My thinking comes to Mario Bros and Overcooked. When I think back to these games I think what am I going to do? Well if you go look at my blog you can see how (here dating). 

One thing I did to help recapture some of the pleasure I get playing with other people, was to think about my friends; what games could I convince them into playing? I know one of my friends likes horror movies, so why don't we play Resident Evil? A friend used to play Mario when he was younger, why don't we play Super Mario Bros Wonder. I got a niece into Lego, why don't we pick one of the many Lego games and play one together. I mean it's simple right. 

I think the hard part is the adulting of life. People are busy, and it’s hard to really nail down a time to have all this fun. That’s why with the friend who I started Resident Evil with 2 years ago we still haven't finished it. While I do get games, and think certain people would also like too, it all comes down to time. Which is why I think playing single player has taken over my time.  Which is why I need to find a friend who loves games as much as I do, and share a similar interest in the same kind of games. Or is willing to give one or two games a go, until we find one we like. Or better yet, find a boyfriend who I could convince to make it a part of the relationship. Playing some of these better two player story games. Have a shared experience. 

I say all of this, as at time of writing Split Fiction has not long been released and I really want to play it and I have no one to play with it.
