007 Ranking

007 Ranking

For the last three years I have done something some people might find interesting. The month of December is the month of Bond, James Bond. 25 days, 25 movies and one a day and I watch them all. When I first started it was a replacement for doing it over summer, now I feel like it will just be something I do every year. The original idea was watch them then rank them. However, that never materialised in the first year. Last year I made sure I graded them, and would make a list. This is my own personal ranking of all the movies.

There are a few rules to this. I have ranked them based on my own enjoyment of the film and how they place over the other. If you just want to skip to number one, go ahead. I will be doing a quick 70.0 (get it?) word review for each of the movies to justify its position.

25 Thunderball

Besides the problematic scenes in this one, this one has a lot of stuff that just goes on that we know twice. As well having a stupid green screen ending. What it does have going for it is some cool moments. Like the spear gun kill, and the pass me something to put on, joke. However do like the theme song.

24 Diamonds Are Forever

It’s sad when I rank a Bond theme higher than the movie. Well this one has some well and stupidness in it, which I normally would like, but not much, this time around. It has a good premise but too bad a lot of what actually happens in the movie doesn’t work for me. But, the henchmen are gay, so yay?

23 The Man With The Golden Gun

This has an intresting premiss, but once again has things that just make no sense. I mean no sense. Like leaving someone behind, then not coming back. Not to mention the racial slurs. However, I do like the golden gun and the opening sequence for this one. Just a shame, it messes up its best stunt with a cartoon sound effect.

22 A View To A Kill

If I was ranking theme songs this would be higher, or Bond Girls, but this movie has a lot of silly things. The dummy fall all from the blimp. The same blimp thing sneaking up on Stacey. Then there is a odd sex scene with Bond and Mayday, which is just awkward. However, it might be the first woman of colour he sleeps with.

21 Die Another Day

For this one , I’m not going shit on it like everyone else does. It does have too many gadgets and some blatant white washing, but it’s a fine movie. I just feel like this was one where the double en tundra’s got too much, and sexy half naked women for sex women sake. But it's got Madonna in it

20 Dr No

The original movie. I would have liked to have this higher, but it is as basic as it can get. It shows Bond is a capable secret agent. Unlike many other movies there is anything really memorable other than it being the first one. There isn't an interesting henchmen, and the villain is only there towards the end. It was just a starting point, and originator of that Simpson joke.

19 Octopussy

Besides the bizarre name, this one is fun but, the deception in the story is so complicated. Of course, there are some racist lines, but I do like the idea of a bunch of women circus performers kicking ass at the end of the movie. It's not the worst, but it could be better.

18 The World Is Not Enough

This one has grown on me, as I saw as a kid first. One thing that isn't clear to a lot of people is who is the main villain, and who is the henchmen. I like the fact it is one of the first to have M be a prominent part of the movie. Also Bond has one of my favourite cars here. Also its beginning so 00s.

17 Moonraker

Another one that has gone up with re-watching it. I always thought it was silly and interesting. However, it has got some interesting ideas they have never touched since. Of course, it does have some silly moments, but the plot is simple enough to follow. It went big then went home.

16 Quantum of Solace

This one has some real word implications to the story, which makes sense. It does have some editing errors, and other issues. It is just fine. Not the greatest and not the worst. I know some people hate it for… reasons. But it's better than some people give it credit for, first to pick up right after the last one ended.

15 Spectre

I love the one shot of the opening, which is a great. This is another one that I have had second thoughts about. It does have some issues with the ending, as I don’t know how a boat catches up with a helicopter, but whatever. I think I like it because it's what some people think what is actually happening.

14 From Russia With Love

This is the one where a lot of the formula is made. It has crazy plan of having a sex tape of Bond released to discredit him. Which I find wild for 1962, but it does have a few gadgets and decent espionage. It was just another movie that added to the foundation of what a good bond movie would be.

13 For Your Eyes Only

This one has a good car chase, and car alarm gag. There is an ex machina parrot, I’m not joking. What I like about this one is the end with rock climbing, and almost falling. It is one of very few movies where Bond doesn’t kill the villain. I just enjoy this one overall, and it has some interesting girl choices.

12 You Only Live Twice

Bond is in Japan, along with yellowface and a pointless bond girl switching. I do enjoy this one as it doesn’t have interesting action scene, and the ending really amps up the action. And has some really good decisions made. It just a well thought out movies and just keeps escalating till the end.

11 Tomorrow Never Dies

Fake news is the business for this one. Which is still an issue today. It’s a simplest Bond story, and it shame certain characters and not in as much as I remember, but still it's good. I enjoyed it more than ever remembered like it. I always felt this was not a good one, but it’s.

10 Live and Let Die

Getting over the racial issues with this one, this Is a good movie. It sets the tone and pace very quickly. Also it has some trippy aspects to the movie. However, it’s a good movie with a good villain who is smart and calculating. Which I don’t remember not knowing of the twist, but I’m glad it has it there. While also continuing to have bond on a train.

9 No Time To Die

When I did this list I didn’t think this would be in the top ten. But this is a good movie, because it ties so much of an era of bond together with a  decent pay off. The reason why I love this movie has to be the scenes in Cuba, and kind wish Poloma was in this movie more. Other than that it was a nice way to end a series.

8 Licence to Kill

The most violent bond movie? Maybe because this one does have some very graphic and gruesome deaths in it. The movie is just a revenge movie. It has no other agenda than that. it's not a spy movie it just straight I’m going to kills this person. Which is interesting take for the series.

7 Casino Royale

This is a weird one because I don’t know if this is set before or after the continuity. However it is a good movie, and good entry for new people. It very much is Bond toned down, which is fine as it is just one movie. It focus more on the characters than everything else that goes into a Bond movie. And some cock and ball torture.

6 Skyfall

Here is where kind of set things back to what people expect a bond movie to be. We get all the old gang back. While M becomes the main Bond girl in my opinion which is interesting and new direction. While we all remember that scene if you’ve seen it. It’s a real good one.

5 On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

This one is controversial to some to be put so high. The reason why I like it, it does a few things we wouldn’t repeat till decades later. While also doing something you should not do, with James Bond as a character, and that put him in a house full of women. The only shame is that we never got a payoff to the ending really.

3 The Spy Who Loved Me

Nobody does it better. One of the best movies out there. Keep the premises simple. Has the wacky villain with the crazy death traps, and painless deaths. While also having one of the most iconic henchmen. While also having some stakes for the central romance.

3 Goldfinger

Being number 3 and third here is just coincidence. This is where the bond formula was founded and perfected. The only thing is just a shame bond doesn’t do much for a large portion in the middle of it. While it does have one of the smartest villains, and the most infamous bond girl. And I have to mention the sexual issues, which isn’t great.

2 The Living Daylights

This is another double cross, triple cross kind of movie. However, this one is a little simpler to following. For me though I do like a lot of the action set pieces in this movie, which have been copied into other media. While also showing Bond two fatal flaws, women and alcohol.

1 Goldeneye

If you skipped here, go back read the rest, but this was kinda obvious. It's got the nostalgia bias of course. This was the one I grew up with, and nothing else may not beat it. However, it is a good bond movie. When I have seen all of them many times I know this is a good one. As well it being a new bond, it very was for the new audience. The story, the acting, the action is just great and why it's my favourite Bond Movie.

Maybe one day I will look at another large movie franchise, but for now I have ranked all 25 Bond movies. When I do my annual rewatch let's see if anything switches places.
